The road trip begins

Today we began our road trip to visit my parents in Colorado. Things got off slower than expected. Natalie spent the morning finishing packing while I watched the kids and did some cleaning around the house. We rolled out of Yucca Valley around lunchtime and grabbed some lunch on our way out of town. Thank you Carl’s Jr. for those delicious bacon western cheeseburgers.

The afternoon drive went smoothly. We saw a few dust devils spiraling through the desert north of Lucerne Valley. Had a quick pit stop in Barstow and stretched the legs at Home Depot, and then made the long push up the I-15 to Vegas. While the kids napped, we listened to messages by Bryan Chappell and John Piper, and Natalie started reading the missionary biography Sensei. We rolled into town shortly after 5 pm and went straight to the Mandalay Bay resort, where the Shark Reef Aquarium is located.

After scanning a few restaurant menus, we quickly realized that food at the Vegas resorts is very pricey. Thankfully, the aquarium offered a discount where you could purchase ticket admission and get dinner buffet for a discount. Even better, both the meal and the aquarium are free for kids 4 and under. So, while the tickets were still expensive, it was a pretty good deal considering both kids were free.

After dinner, we spent about an hour and a half strolling through the aquarium. We saw a komodo dragon, a crocodile, pirhanas, tiger fish, a sea turtle, an octopus, and of course, lots of sharks. There was also a touch pool with manta rays. It was a great little aquarium. Just right for the attention span of two toddlers. I think Dylan’s favorite was the jellyfish. My personal favorite was the sawfish. God sure shows a sense of humor in some of His creatures!

At one point, as we watched a shark swim toward us, Dylan asked me if it was going to “get us.” I assured him we were safe on the other side of the glass, and that it wouldn’t hurt us. It was a reminder to me that Satan may frighten us, our enemies may threaten us, and evil may surround us, but we do not need to be afraid, because God is with us, and He will always protect His children from the evil one. “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

Heidi is walking

I’m re-posting this video via YouTube. The Facebook video player was not very reliable.

This video of Heidi was recorded on Tuesday, March 17. The night before, she had taken three steps, but this was her longest walk ever. It’s amazing how much more sure-footed she has become just in the last three weeks!

Happy Birthday, Heidi!

Dear Heidi,

One year ago today, God brought you into this world, and how fast you’ve grown!

You’ve brought so much joy and energy into our family. You’re playful and sneaky. You love to giggle and squeal. And you’re so close to walking all by yourself! You’ve got lots of teeth and are such a big girl eating finger foods. You’re a wonderful playmate for Dylan, and make your Mommy and Daddy so very proud. We’re pray you will some day know the Lord Jesus as your Savior and find new life in Him.

Heidi, we love you, and thank God for you! Happy Birthday!

Love,
Mommy & Daddy

The message behind children’s clothes

Gender blog is doing a good series on children’s clothing. The main point:

The clothes that our children wear do not merely cover the nakedness of their flesh; they shape and reflect the contours of our children’s souls. What I encourage my child to wear is a statement not merely of fashion but of theology and axiology-and this link between our theology and our wardrobes is not a recent phenomenon.

Right now, my kids are only 1 and 3 years old. They’re quite content wearing dinosaurs and flowers on their apparel. But as they grow older, I know it will become harder and harder to buy clothes for them that are stylish, yet more importantly, modest and containing appropriate messages.

Clothing is like a personal billboard of your worldview. Parents cannot afford to be passive on the issue.

Looking back at 2008

Al Mohler lists ten historical events that occurred in 2008. What a year it’s been!

2. America becomes Ground Zero of a global economic crisis.
3. The Bush Administration prepares to depart.
4. Controversy in the Episcopal Church leads to schism.
5. California voters approve Proposition 8.
6. The death of Alexander Solzhenitsyn marks end of an era.
7. Euthanasia is approved in Washington State.
8. John Edwards is caught in a sexual affair — and America cared.
9. Atheists launch public relations efforts.
10. The world takes note of a demographic downturn — Where are the babies?

Here are seven more events in 2008 that were noteworthy for my family:

1. Our daughter Heidi Amelia was born.
2. Dylan was potty trained and has really developed mentally and socially in the last year
3. I reached the two-year mark of pastoring at our church and finally feel as though we’re settling into a routine.
4. We found a nice camp near Big Bear Lake for our family to take short, refreshing vacations. We look forward to making many more memories there in the years to come.
5. Our church started a young adults Bible Study and we have seen a few new families attending the church.
6. Our church developed a mission statement that has allowed us to make some strategic ministry changes.
7. We had a record-level snowfall in the middle of December.
