How To Quickly Develop Preachers

Cooking takes time. I suppose you could grab a frozen dinner, heat it in the microwave for four minutes, then sit down and eat. But the quality, nutritional value, and taste of the product will show. The same is true of preaching.

Like cooking, sermon prep and “preacher prep” take time. It takes a LOT of time to shape and equip a man as an expositor of God’s word. For example, the seminary where I attended has an MDiv program of 98 units (representing 3-4 years and thousands of hours). It could be argued every single one of those hours was spent in some way preparing men to become expositors. And having received our degree, many of us still felt like we were just getting started!

So it is with great hesitation I write a post “How to Quickly Develop Preachers.” In one sense, this is an impossibility. But what would you do if you had only a limited time, say, just over a month, to develop the next preacher in your church?

For one friend, this is no hypothetical. He recently said he has only been given five weeks to train some preachers, and then his access and involvement to this flock will be largely cut off. As you might have guessed, he is in an international context. He recently asked a few friends, “Do any of you have short homiletics seminars / bootcamps / courses / resources to share that might be of help as I train some of these men?”

Here was my reply:

What an excellent, practical question. I am praying the Lord will give you wisdom and efficiency with what little time you have.

I think the two most important things you need to discuss are hermeneutics and homiletics. These two provide the building blocks for everything else in sound exegetical teaching and preaching.

Hermeneutics (the rules of biblical interpretation). R.C. Sproul’s little 125 page book Knowing Scripture is gold. In chapter 4, he shares ten rules for Bible interpretation: Interpret like any book. Read existentially. Interpret the historical by the didactic. Interpret the implicit by the explicit. Determine the meaning of words. Parallelism. Proverb and law. The spirit vs. the letter of the law. Be careful with parables and predictive prophecy. This short book distills much of what I grew up learning as a Christian and had reinforced in seminary. His last chapter on practical tools for Bible Study will also help a Bible student or preacher build their own personal library.

Homiletics (the art and science of preaching).  David Murray’s book How Sermons Work is short, comprehensive, and full of practical examples. He covers all the bases including preparation, selecting a text, interrogation (exegesis), variety in preaching, sermon introductions, organizing the material, developing applications, and the actual preaching event. All in 150 pages!

Studying these two topics of hermeneutics and homiletics, while also listening and evaluating sample sermons, and then practicing preaching short sermons are probably the best ways to learn.

If necessary, these principles could be taught in a few weeks, though the skills will take a lifetime to master. And still, we will exclaim with Paul, “Who is sufficient for these things?”

2 Corinthians 3:4–6 Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Pastor’s Picks – April 9, 2020

Here are some announcements, opportunities, and articles I think you will find of interest this week…

How Has God Blessed You? If you have been following our Family Guide to the Holy Week, then you will notice you had a special assignment today to share one way God has blessed you, or some way he has grown you in the past month. Why not leave a comment below? Just one or two sentences will do. We want to hear from you!

Good Friday Activities. Jesus hung on the cross from 9am to 3pm on Good Friday. To honor the time when darkness covered the land, I will be sharing a short Good Friday devotional tomorrow at 12 Noon on our church Facebook page. Hope you can join me. Earlier in the morning, you are invited by the Southern Baptist Convention to participate in an Online Prayer Gathering at Noon Central/10am PT.

Online Services – Tell A Friend! One of our elders Jerry wrote this week, “I would like to encourage everybody about what is going on in today’s world. I believe it is our time, I think it is a very important time for God’s church, His people, to help nonbelievers to hear Gods word. The Lord has given us this opportunity to help spread His word. He has given us the technology, but it is also up to us. We need to get ambitious and contact people to listen and watch pastor Stephen.” Please do invite your friends and family to tune in to our Easter Sunday livestream this weekend. As a reminder, here’s the link to our church Facebook page.

Homemade Face Masks Needed. The County Office of Emergency Services has contacted our local VOAD chapter and requested homemade face coverings. They need to be 100% cotton, 3 layers, any pattern/style. No sport related. Marjorie Smith can arrange pick up, and the EOC will work on distribution to County employees who are essential and still working. Please contact Marjorie if you are interested.

Animated Bible Story. One of our members shared a link to a free video of The Biggest Story. “This is one of my favorite books for the kids. I’ve gifted the book several times because I think it’s so great. They made it into a short film. It’s free to stream right now.” Available through April 12.

Romans 13 and The COVID-19 Crisis. Have you wondered how we should handle the stay-at-home orders and increasing restrictions from our government? Doug Wilson has written an thought provoking post on what submission to the government is and isn’t. “What we have been doing at Christ Church thus far, as a church, is to comply with the orders of our governor and our mayor. We will continue to do this until it becomes obvious to us that the orders are an abuse of their legitimate authority to quarantine.” Read the whole article here.

Vacation Bible School Postponed. After much thought and prayer, we’ve decided to postpone our Vacation Bible School until July 27-31, 2020. Lord willing, this will give us time for life to return to normal, and for us to publicize and prepare for our big summer outreach. All kids 1st-8th grade are invited!

COVID-19 Stimulus Package and Charitable Giving. “Recently, Congress agreed upon a complex stimulus package (800 pages worth) intended to aid Americans during this recent COVID-19 trial. Since you are a valued partner in the ministry…we wanted to simplify some aspects of the passed legislation and highlight some of the ways this may affect charitable giving moving forward.” This short article from The Master’s University will help anyone who supports non-profit organizations (including our church) to know what to expect about your upcoming check from the government and 2020 charitable contributions.

Exalting Christ Together,

Pastor Stephen Jones

A Family Guide to the Holy Week

Tomorrow starts the most important week in the Christian calendar – the Holy Week (or Passion Week) of Christ.

Normally, this is a time of celebration, public gathering, reflection, and worship. Our church calendar is usually filled with an Easter Cantata, Walking Tour at Desert Christ Park, Community Good Friday Service, Easter Sunrise Service, and Easter Celebration Service followed by an Easter Egg Hunt.

This year, the Holy Week is shaping up to be a time of isolation, mourning death from a pandemic, and the scattering of God’s church. But we shouldn’t allow this to prevent us from celebrating Easter. If anything, the dark backdrop of current events give us even more reason to celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death.

Though we can’t be together this year, I’ve put together some activities for you and your family. It could be a fun and unique way for our church family to learn and grow together, and to celebrate what is the most important holiday of our faith.

Pastor’s Picks – April 3, 2020

For a nation on lockdown, there is A LOT going on! It’s hard to keep up with all the needs, opportunities, articles, and resources. I’ve tried to curate some of them and share highlights I think will be useful and interesting to you…

Online Services I challenge each of you to invite three friends to watch our online services these next two weeks. Many people are stuck at home with little else to do, and this is an unprecedented opportunity to share the story of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ before a watching world. We will be singing and celebrating Palm Sunday this weekend, then the Resurrection on April 12 Easter Sunday. Just a heads up, we are planning to take communion together (from our homes) on April 12 as part of our worship service, so try to have some Saltine crackers and grape juice on hand.

World News Our family is trying to drastically limit our news consumption so we don’t fuel fear and worry endlessly about details that are outside our control. It is important to stay informed and keep praying, but in times like these, it is also important to “Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3). If you are looking for a reliable news source that is timely and relevant from a biblical worldview without giving in to panic and sensationalism, I highly recommend the World News website, along with their print magazine and daily podcast. https://world.wng.org/

Free Resources Many ministries are giving away free resources during this quarantine time. These include Adventures in Odyssey, the Pilgrims Progress feature animated film, Audible stories, creationism resources, Ligonier teaching, and more. You can find a full list here: https://www.challies.com/resources/all-the-free-and-discounted-stuff-for-these-difficult-times/

Good News Club Speaking of free resources, Child Evangelism Fellowship has put together an online 30-minute weekly Good News Club. This and other more interactive ways are being designed to connect with children during this shelter-in-place period. Relax, sit and watch with the children at home, and maybe start a light discussion that could end up to be a wonderful teaching moment. The first episode is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBJWohQcA1Q

Desert Christ Park Tour I was originally planning to lead a walking tour this weekend on Palm Sunday afternoon, but since we had to cancel it this year, I recorded a “virtual tour” instead. If you’ve never visited Desert Christ Park, this is your chance! https://youtu.be/V4Es1JMUHPQ

Money-Saving Tips Crown Financial Ministries recommends cutting back living expenses for the next 90 days, and has made a list of some practical ways to do this. https://www.crown.org/blog/the-crown-staffs-money-saving-covid/

Small Business Emergency Loan Program The Town of Yucca Valley is providing interest free emergency loans and grants of up to $5,000 for local small businesses. The intent of this program is to assist small, independent local businesses that may have difficulty in quickly obtaining funding through other state or federal programs. Program requirements will include submission of a prior year tax return, a description of the impact of COVID-19 on the business, and the proposed recovery plan. For details, visit http://www.yucca-valley.org/news/yucca-supports.html

Morongo Basin COAD The Morongo Basin (Community Organizations Active in Disasters) has now been activated. They will be asking volunteers to spring into action as needs arrive. Yesterday, they posted need for volunteers at a food bank in Hesperia, and today there were a coupe residents in YV who needed food delivery (this need has now been met). Our regional director, Marjorie Smith, will be in regular contact with county emergency services and will be letting me know when new needs. If you would like to receive these emails, please d/m me.

Blood Donations Those who are healthy and able-bodied are encouraged to donate blood during this crisis. The Surgeon General said last month, “Donating blood is an essential part of caring for patients, and one donation can save up to three lives. Blood centers are open now and in need of your donation. Blood donation is safe, and blood centers are taking extra precautions during this time based on new CDC recommendations.” There will be a bloodmobile next Friday at the Hi Desert Star, and another one at the Center for Healthy Generations on Saturday the 18th. Other locations are available too. For details, visit https://giftoflife.lstream.org/donor/schedules/zip.
