Great is Thy Faithfulness (Lamentations 3)

Have you ever hit “rock bottom” before God got finally got your attention? The nation of Israel did. This morning in our Bible Study Community, we did a one-lesson overview of the Book of Lamentations. I’d love to study this book more someday! Attendance was down a bit today with the bad weather, but not to worry, we recorded the lesson and you can listen along right here. In this passage, we learn…

  • That it’s OK to cry… and that many godly people have
  • The dazzling symmetry and poetry of Lamentations
  • How moments of shame can lead to repentance and renewal
  • Where Jeremiah drew hope in the midst of suffering

Understanding the Heart Struggle (James 4:1-3)

Not a day goes by we don’t experience some kind of conflict. What causes all these fights and quarrels? James 4 gives us the answer. In this lesson, we learn…

  • The heart is more than just a place for feelings and emotions. There’s a lot going on in there!
  • Key Bible passages that show behavior stems from the heart
  • How our “passions” war within our members and create conflict
  • Practical examples of how legitimate desires can morph into unrealistic expectations
  • I will introduce you to a little exercise called the “want box” you can use to identify wants in a particular area of life such as family, work, or church. If we’re not careful, these things will turn into needs and demands that we then impose on others.
  • If someone doesn’t meet our needs, does that give us permission to fail to fulfill our own duty toward them?
  • The importance of sympathizing with those who experience disappointment
  • The ongoing battle between the flesh and the spirit

Thanks for listening! This is week three in our 11-week study on biblical counseling called, “Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands.” Next week, we will focus on how Jesus is our wonderful counselor.

The Heart is the Target (Luke 6:43-46)

“Trust your feelings” Master Obi Wan says.

Follow your heart,” Cinderella sings.

In the real world, is this actually good advice? Last Wednesday, we looked together at Luke 6:43-46, a key passage on biblical counseling. In it, we noted the relationship of root and fruit, and learned together…

  • There is a direct connection between behavior and the heart
  • Examples of bad fruit vs. good fruit in our speech
  • Why behavior modification is not enough
  • Jesus’ evaluation of the human heart
  • How idols pop up in the heart
  • Some practical ways to detect what’s going on in the heart

Justice Will Prevail (Jeremiah 50)

This royal seal shows Darius I, king of Persia, riding in a chariot with bow in hand. He shoots a lion which is the embodiment of chaos. The Medes had once been a remote, inconsequential mountain-dwelling people south of the Caspian Sea, but they united with the Persians and rose to power under God’s sovereign hand to bring judgment on Babylon. Seal on display in the British Museum.

For many years, Babylon had been the “hammer of the earth,” smashing other nations and carrying out God’s judgment (Jer. 50:23). But in Jeremiah 50-51, the time has come for Babylon itself to experience God’s vengeance. In this lesson, we learn…

  • A quick overview of the final chapters of Jeremiah
  • How Jeremiah connects to other events happening in the ancient world
  • Who is the “nation from the north”?
  • How should Christians react when wicked people get caught and punished?
  • Why Christians should thank God for his wrath
  • What “Babylon the Great” refers to in the Book of Revelation
  • God’s covenant faithfulness to Israel, and what this means for us today

God Says Not to Go (Jeremiah 42)

The little town of Anathoth north of Jerusalem is where the prophet Jeremiah grew up. This photo was taken around 1900.

Have you ever asked God for direction, only to be unhappy with the answer he gave? In Jeremiah 42, the people of Israel come to Jeremiah asking for counsel, and pledging their obedience. No sooner does the prophet respond, then they press forward with their own plans, call Jeremiah a liar, and head straight into destruction in Egypt. Now that’s what I call hard-hearted! In this lesson I share…

  • Our goal for this brand new Bible Study Community
  • A quick fly-over of Israel’s history from Genesis to Jeremiah
  • How to figure out the quirky order of the Book of Jeremiah
  • God’s surprising advice to the nation of Israel
  • Why we don’t need to be afraid, even when the odds seem overwhelming
  • The danger of asking God for advice, then doing the opposite of what he says
